In response to
Kazakhstan’s ban on grain exports until September 2008,
Tajikistan is looking for new suppliers, the head of the Tajik Customs Service, Gurez Zaripov, has said. Before the ban, up to 98% of Tajik grain imports came from
Kazakhstan.

The Chevron-led Tengizchevroil (TCO) joint venture, which is developing the major Tengiz field, joined the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative on 16 April. The main purpose of the initiative is to make extractive companies’ financial reporting transparent.

The Kazakh government has decided in favour of imposing a customs duty on oil exports worth $109.91 a tonne. The oil export duty was calculated taking into account the average world price of crude oil in the first quarter of 2008 which stood at $714.9 a tonne, and is bound to change with a change in the oil price.
